George A. Simons, 86 of Jacksonville passed away Monday August 13, 2018 at his residence.  Born December 17, 1931 in Athens County, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Kochis Simons.  George was known for helping others in his Jacksonville community.   He collected and delivered mail to those who were unable to do so themselves and he maintained the grass at the original Jacksonville Park for several years.  He was the 1999 Honorary Grand Marshall of the Old Settlers Reunion, an assistant Trimble High School basketball coach for several years, a member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.  He retired from Timken Roller Bearing in Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley R. Russell Simons of Jacksonville; two sons, Greg (Joan) Simons of Lancaster and Christopher (Helen) Simons of Jacksonville; two daughters, Georgia Simons of Jacksonville and Rose (Ronnie) Gamble of Hollywood, Alabama; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and  two brothers, Jim (Anita) Simons of Jacksonville and Mike Simons of West Virginia.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Stephen Simons; a brother, Bob Simons; and a sister, Orpha Tippett.

A Catholic Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 16, 2018 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Glouster with Father Christopher Foxhoven officiating.  Interment will be in the Greenlawn Memory Gardens, Nelsonville.  Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. where there will be a wake at 7:30.  Contributions can be made to Ohio Health Hospice, 444 West Union Street, Athens, Ohio 45701.  A comforting message may be sent to the family at www.morrisonfc.com.
