Caroline P. Grandy

Caroline P. (Kestner) Grandy, 79 of Buchtel left this world on Monday November 20, 2017 surrounded by her loving husband, Virgil “Dick” Grandy, her four children, Brenda (John) Johnson, Karen (Rick) Sheets, Rebecca (Gregory) Patton, and Kirk (Tonya Kerr) Grandy.  She leaves behind nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two brothers, Robert (Frances) Kestner and Raymond (Kay) Kestner, and countless nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, C. Raymond “Major” Kestner Sr. and Hazel Moore Kestner, and her great grandson, Camden Patton.

Caroline left her mark on the world.  She was a devoted wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  When she knocked on the door it was always to the notes of “a shave and a haircut”.  She was a devout lover of Elvis and a collector of plates that bear his image.  She taught her children and grandchildren to love their neighbor, how to play rummy and win, the true secrets of life and family, and had the gift to make you feel like you were the most important person in the world because to her you were.  She was a master chef (egg noodles, but never dumplimgs), believed that everyone deserved a hot meal, and never turned anyone away from her table.  She made sure that there was a tootsie roll bank for each of her children and grandchildren under the Christmas tree, and a cloth calendar for each of her siblings, in-laws, and friends.  She gave extra money with each birthday card to cover the tax.  She believed in love and family and Caroline believed in leaving the world better than she found it, and she did.

She regularly attended the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church.  She was a master story teller, quick in her wit, a former Miss Old Settler’s Reunion Queen, a fighter, and a survivor.  She was an Appalachian spitfire.  She was the kind of woman that made the world a better place.  And it is a better place because she lived.

Please join us in honoring her legacy and her mark on this world at 11 a.m. on Saturday November 25, 2017 at the Nelsonville Wesleyan Church, 602 Chestnut Street, Nelsonville, Ohio 45732 with Pastor Mike Thomas officiating.  Interment will be in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Nelsonville.  Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Chapel, 6525 S.
