John S. Conklin

John S. Conklin died peacefully on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at Hickory Creek Nursing Center in The Plains, Ohio. John was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1944 and graduated from Transylvania College in 1966 with a degree in Mathematics and Physics. He received a Masters degree from Ohio University.

John taught mathematics at Trimble Local High School in Glouster, Ohio, retiring in 2002 after 35 years. During his time at Trimble and into retirement he was the Statistician for the football and basketball teams, and for this he was inducted into the THS athletic hall of fame. He was a longtime member of the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics and Ohio Mathematics and Science Coalition.

During the American bicentennial, John joined the Brigade of the American Revolution (BAR), participating in historical reenactments and educational events as a fifer with Crockett’s Western Battalion and the Field Musick of the American Revolution. He also participated as a member of the Royal Navy Landing Party artillery unit and was honored with membership in the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara. He served on the BAR Northwest Department board for many years and he and his family have enjoyed lifelong friendships as part of the hobby.

A true renaissance man with an insatiable curiosity, John enjoyed many other hobbies including reading, gardening, woodworking, basket making, beer and bourbon tasting, making maple syrup, and working with natural fibers like wool-spinning, weaving, dyeing, and knitting, He was a regular at Movies 10 and previously volunteered with the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway. John was a firm believer in blood donation, donating 94 pints of blood during his life. He was known to take the road less traveled, stopping at any attraction that captured his interest and sharing his findings with friends and family.  

John is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Cindy Sheets Conklin; his children Jeff Conklin (Dawn Conklin), Sean Conklin (Natasha Conklin) and Kendra Conklin (Dave Welsh); grandchildren Kim, Beckie, Zachary, Alice, Monica and Michael; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his brother Alfred R. Conklin Jr. (Petra Conklin) and sister Ruthann Bow (Martin Leon Bow); eleven nieces and nephews, and many additional family members and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Alfred R. and Ruth E. Dwelly Conklin, and nephew Brandon Bow.

In order to align with his wishes and personality, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to The Alzheimer’s Association or the Trimble Local Textbook & Supplies Foundation are welcomed.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Morrison Funeral Chapel, Glouster-Bishopville.
